A guide to our care of your child
WHAT TO PACK
We explore the outdoor environment in the rain and shine, so it's a good idea to pack some extra changes of clothes.
We suggest the following:
three changes of clothing (named)
sunhat and togs for warmer weather
raincoat and gumboots for those cooler, wet days
wet bag for the wet clothing
nappies, sleepsacks and cuddlies (if needed)
drink bottle and lunchbox, bottles and formula (if needed)
FOREST WALKS/NGAHERE HIKOI
Every week on Tuesday and Thursday, a small group of 10 of our oldest Tamariki and two Kaiako pack a picnic and have the chance to go and explore our local domain.
Tamariki enjoy climbing trees, weaving through the bush, creating huts, and exploring all that nature has to offer.
This is such a treasured and much-loved ritual in our Koru room.
There are so many benefits to being in nature and this ritual is a very important part of our curriculum.
SLEEP/MOI TIME
We have a dedicated sleep room in both our Koru and Pepe Rooms.
This space has dimmed lighting, soft music playing, and a heat pump to keep the rooms at just the right temperature.
We have cots for our youngest children and mattresses for our older children.
We supply cotton sheets and woollen blankets for the children, and you are welcome to bring your child's sleep sack, cuddlies, or special sleep toys from home.
Through discussion with whanau, Kaiako get to know the rhythms of your child's day, when and how they go to sleep at home, and we support these rhythms as much as we can.
MEAL TIMES/KAI TIME
We have real dining tables for the children to sit at with a variety of seats to support them.
In our Pepe Room, we follow the child's rhythm as well as offering morning tea at 9.30 am, lunch at 11.30 am, and afternoon tea when the children wake.
In our Koru Room, we have a rolling morning tea at 10.00 am, and afternoon tea at 2.00 pm, which means that one Kaiako sits at a table and children come and join when there is a space and they are ready.
For lunch, we all come together as a group and sit at the two dining tables. We use real china and glass in both rooms so that children learn a sense of responsibility.
Once lunch is finished, children are invited to wash their own face and hands with a warm cloth.
Children need to bring their own lunchbox for lunch and afternoon tea. Baking is eaten for morning tea, which is made daily with the Koru children.
SUMMER SUN SAFETY
It is compulsory for children to wear a hat and sunscreen during our summer months.
We ask all whanau to apply sunscreen to their child before arriving in the morning, and we reapply throughout the day.
We do provide sunscreen, however, if your child is allergic, you are welcome to bring your own.
We encourage whanau to pack a rash shirt and togs for those warmer days when we are outside engaging in water play.
TOGETHER TIME
In our Koru Room, the rhythm of the day is led by the children's play.
Just before lunch, we all come together to take that breath in, share a moment as a whole group and enjoy storytelling, reading a book, yoga, or music and movement.
